Juniors set sail on 'The Matthew'

This term, children in Year 4 have been learning about ‘People who have made a significant difference’.

As part of their topic, they found out about some of the early explorers and in particular John Cabot, who sailed from Bristol in 1497 in his ship ‘The Matthew’, with the intention of finding a westerly route to Asia.

The children had a trip around the harbour in Bristol on the replica of The Matthew and they learned about what life was like on board. They were fascinated to learn the origin of the phrase ‘toe-rag’!

After our short voyage, the children visited the Art Gallery in the Bristol Museum where they had an art workshop based on studies of landscape paintings.

The children thoroughly enjoyed their day out and agreed that it was a positive learning experience.
