Director of Music : Miss Sarah Scutt
Each form has two 40 minute weekly class music lessons. Practical musical experience is always at the heart of these sessions. Children are encouraged to explore, discuss, perform and evaluate music through a range of "hands-on" activities. In Year Three, pupils spend one of their lessons learning the basics of the recorder, violin and cello to expand their musical experience. In Years Four to Six, one weekly lesson is usually a class ensemble lesson. This typically involves a class group singing, or playing in a group comprising orchestral instruments, recorders and keyboards. Ensemble music played varies from jazz, to Baroque, to African drumming, percussion ensembles and even "choirs" of Boomwhacker tubes!
Children are exposed to a huge variety of music throughout their time at Queen's and are encouraged to explore further at home. Pupils enjoy composition, and have opportunities to create music based both on the work of other composers and on totally original material. Much of the work in classroom music is project based, incorporating links to other subjects, for example:water music, African drumming and Blues, space music, minibeast music, Stravinksy and music of the Second World War. The music department is never a quiet place to be!
