Introduction

At Queen's our Sixth Form are not just older pupils. This is a school within a school, housed in its own distinct building with access restricted to Years 12 & 13. There is a modern state-of-the-art learning resource centre, with every PC linked to the school's high-speed IT network. Downstairs is a luxurious social centre with comfortable furnishings, satellite television, music system and the facility for students to make their own snacks.

However, the Sixth Form are very much a part of the main school body through their leadership role. As House and School prefects and as members of the Executive our young people learn how to exercise administrative and judgement skills.

Academically the emphasis is firmly on independent learning. Teachers see their function as guiding the Sixth Form through their A-level courses, pointing them towards the right reading and Web resources. An increasing number of more specialised subjects is being provided through online courses, used in conjunction with Queen's dedicated video conferencing suite. Students are closely monitored during their two years in the Sixth Form by their individual tutors to avoid the difficulties that can happen when youngsters fall behind with demanding work schedules.

But it's not all work. Sixth Formers still make up most of the school's flagship sports teams. Recently the rugby team toured New Zealand whilst the cricket and hockey teams have played West Indian teams in Barbados. Activities such as paintballing and theatre visits are frequently on offer. The monthly meetings of the Sixth Form Society are crucial in broadening the minds and world view of our students. Speakers cover a wide spectrum of activities from sportsmen to entertainers (not forgetting the occasional academic).
