French

French is taught throughout the Junior School.

We use the excellent course for young learners, ‘La Jolie Ronde', which inspires children through a fun oral approach.  Pupils are actively involved in lessons and learn through the many and varied rhymes, songs and role-plays.  Emphasis is on listening and speaking skills.  Reading and writing are introduced gradually over the four years and then only when words and phrases are already familiar.

Once pupils in all year groups have learned the basics of any given topic they are encouraged to change bits and develop them.  In years 5 and 6 they do more role-plays and dialogues, which they can adapt, and increasingly emphasis is put on the creative use of language.

Some geography and culture of France is included and children are always encouraged to share their French experiences.
