Geography

Head of Geography : Mrs Annie Camera
Geography begins in Year 5 with an in depth study of water. The children find out where it comes from, how it is recycled and how it is stored and its very many uses. The children also look at 2 countries, Egypt and Bangladesh and look at the influence water has on the lives of the people. In the spring term the classes travel to Italy, they plan a family holiday and put together a project using ICT to help them with presentation. In the summer sustainability within the home and school is the springboard for a field trip to the Magdelan Project and a close look at global warming.
Year 6 begins with a detailed look at maps and mapping. This topic includes learning how to use 6 figure grid references, using contours to appreciate the lie of the land, making cross sections to confirm shape and OS symbols to find out what can be found in different places. The second part of the Autumn Term is devoted to natural weather disasters, how and why they occur and the results for the people involved.
From January to March the children study mountains with a particular emphasis on volcanoes and earthquakes. The final term includes a field trip to the Field study centre at Nettlecombe where the children look at rivers, river meanders and river flow as part of their topic on river development.
The aims of Junior Geography are very simple, to stimulate debate, encourage enquiry, increase knowledge of place and space and allow the natural enthusiasm of children full rein within a structured environment.
