Head of Art : Phil Dudman
Art plays a vital role in forming students' understanding of the world around them and provides them with an opportunity to express themselves creatively.
Year 4
In Year 4 students learn about colour theory, and through a series of exercises develop their understanding as well as their confidence level. In the Spring and Summer terms students produce more project based work; one example being a piece of work called ‘journeys', where students look at Aboriginal Dreamings before developing their own responses.
Year 5
Drawing is very much the centre point of work produced in Year 5. Students commence with a series of drawing tasks before working on a project which has observational drawing as a starting point. For example a project based on Surrealism would involve drawing objects from observation, before imagining the same objects in an unusual setting. During Year 5 students experience working with a variety of materials including paint (poster acrylic), pencil, oilpastel, ink and chalk.
Year 6
Year 6 continue to work on projects with observational drawing as a starting point. Most work will have an Historical Art link and Artists are chosen to demonstrate to the students some of the broad range of styles and techniques that are possible.
In the Art Department achievement is celebrated through the display of work around the school site, and there is an exhibition of students' work on Speech Day at the end of the Summer term.
