Art

The superb new Drama & Art building at Queen’s has provided us with some of the best school facilities in the south west. The spacious, brilliantly lit studios provide specialist teaching facilities for 3D and ceramics work, printmaking, textiles and painting. There are also well-equipped rooms for GCSE and A level students.

Claire Western, Head of Department

Laura Burgoyne

John Rogerson [from September 2010]

Claire Western is a well-established painter and Laura Burgoyne is a textiles specialist. Their enthusiasm for their own areas of expertise and wealth of teaching experience have lproduced fantastic projects and displays, enriching the whole school environment. The popularity of Art and the ever-widening range of our work here has enabled the appointment of an additional full-time member of staff with expertise in ceramics.

Years 7-9

Each class has one double lesson a week. A carefully planned scheme, with drawing very much at its core, ensures that each student will cover the areas of drawing, painting, printmaking and ceramics during each academic year. By the end of year 9, they will have a good foundation on which to build if they choose Art as a GCSE option.

Increasing numbers of students choose this popular subject, with large numbers of pupils becoming involved in the wide range of opportunities on offer. In addition to the creation of artwork of the highest standard, pupils are encouraged to understand the importance and relevance of Art and Design to modern life.

AS/A level

This is a popular A level subject in which the students produce superb work with excellent examination results.

Visits to galleries and trips abroad, most recently to Barcelona and Venice are an important part of the department’s activities.

There are many co-curricular activities on offer, after school and at weekends, and the studios are generally a hive of activity. Visitors to the Art department are very welcome and there is always plenty to see.
