History

Head of Department; Geoff Bisson,

Donna Ashman, Mel Smith

Telling stories - big, small and tall, always interesting and often amusing - is the stuff of history. We try to provide a broad picture of change over time, stretching from Europe in the 16th century to theTudors and Stuarts (Years 7-8), through the 18th and 19th centuries (Year 9), to the modern world of the 20th century for GCSE. At 'A'Level students can opt to examine one of two historical periods.

"History is bunk" was the view of Henry Ford. Perhaps typical of some who judge education in purely vocational terms. Indeed, history is a suitable qualification in many fields of work, from banking to broadcasting, teaching to tourism, public relations to politics as examples.

The department is small, young at heart and keen to enthuse. Most pupils respond positively, reflected in sound academic results and recognition by those exposed to the subject that the experience was worthwhile.
