Food Preparation and Nutrition

In AQA GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition we encourage pupils of all abilities to make full use of their skills and to reach their potential.

The technology building provides spacious accommodation and includes a large computer suite, a food preparation kitchen with an ICT room as well as a nutrition teaching room with a demonstration kitchen.

Over this academic year we have used local food businesses to help with knowledge and understanding of food science by visiting Quicke’s Dairy Farm in Devon to learn about the production of dairy foods.

These visits bring topics to life and allow students to see first hand how different foods are produced and the advantages of buying locally produced foods.

Pupils are encouraged to enter external competitions such as the Rotary Young Chef Competition and Junior South West Chef of the Year.  Munopa (year 10) is through to the SW Chef Final in October 2019, having already won the County Final.   This year we invited Denis (our school chef) into our lesson to demonstrate advanced cookery skills which the Year 11’s included in their GCSE NEA tasks.

There are 6 main topics in the GCSE Course:

  • Food Preparation Skills
  • Food, Nutrition and Health
  • Food Science
  • Food Safety
  • Food Choice
  • Food Provenance
