In Food and Nutrition we encourage pupils of all abilities to make full use of their talents and reach their potential. The department is housed in the Hodgson Building which was recently redesigned and refurbished. The building provides spacious accommodation and includes a large computer suite, a Food preparation kitchen with an ICT room, a Nutrition teaching room with a demonstration kitchen. Pupils have gone on to a variety of excellent universities to read courses such as, Product Development, Nutrition, Dietetics, and Nursing.
Pupils are encouraged to enter external competitions such as the Rotary Young Chef competition (the regional final was won by one of our pupils this year) and to gain level 2 qualifications in Food Hygiene – required for holiday jobs.
Years 9, 10 and 11 have all had the opportunity to take the level 2 Food Safety in Catering Certificate with great success.
This year we invited Glenn Cosby into school to demonstrate advanced cookery skills which the Year 11’s included in their GCSE controlled assessment tasks.
Over this academic year we have used the expertise of sports nutritionists, dieticians and home economists to aid both GCSE and A level coursework.
