Year 5 Pupil Bertie Climbs Scafell Pike to Support The Christmas Sparkle Project

Queen’s College is proud to highlight the impressive achievements of Year 5 pupil, Bertie, who set out to challenge himself during the summer holidays by climbing Scafell Pike, England’s highest mountain, while raising money for The Christmas Sparkle Project. This charity, supported by the school each year, helps to bring joy to children in Taunton and Wellington by providing Christmas gifts to families in need. Through his determination, Bertie has raised over £1,000 for the cause.

Bertie, aged 9, was inspired to undertake this challenge as a way to push himself during the break. After discussing options with his parents, they decided on an expedition to Scafell Pike, complete with wild camping along the way. Bertie spent the first part of the summer training, taking on smaller hills and mountains in preparation for his climb. He completed six training walks across the UK, including routes in Cheshire, Derbyshire, Somerset, Yorkshire, and Lancashire, with ascents of Pendle Hill and Kinder Scout.

The main event took place in August, where Bertie and his family hiked a staggering 23km over 24 hours, conquering three of England’s highest peaks: Scafell Pike, Ill Crag, and Broad Crag. On the Friday of the expedition, they began their journey from Great Langdale Valley (150m) to Angle Tarn (600m), where they set up camp for the night. The following day, they successfully summited the peaks, with Bertie’s determination and resilience shining through.

The Christmas Sparkle Project is especially close to Bertie’s heart, as his Year 4 teacher, Mrs. Thompson Gardiner, is a core member of the project team. Bertie and his family have supported the charity since he was young, and this year, he saw an opportunity to contribute in a more meaningful way. “It would be extra special for me if I could help her and her friends in the amazing work they do every year,” Bertie shared on his fundraising page.

Queen’s College is incredibly proud of Bertie’s dedication, both to his personal challenge and to helping others. His commitment exemplifies the school’s values of ambition, care, and community spirit.
