Fresh Mussels Deliver a Taste of Learning for Pupils

This week, Pupils in Food and Nutrition have had the exciting opportunity to enhance their fish preparation and cooking skills with 8kg of sustainably rope-grown mussels from the South West. This initiative forms part of the Fish in Schools Hero programme, led by the Food Teachers Centre, which aims to ensure every child has the chance to prepare, cook, and eat fish before they leave school.

As part of their practical classes, students have been learning about food sustainability, provenance, and healthy eating while creating delicious dishes with the fresh shellfish.

Mr. Mann, Head of Art, Design, and Food Faculty, shared his enthusiasm for the project: “We are thrilled to have been selected to receive this shellfish. It’s a fantastic opportunity for students to learn about wild fisheries, explore the tastes and textures of mussels, and develop confidence in preparing and cooking them safely.”

The initiative has provided an engaging, hands-on experience, blending sustainability education with culinary creativity.
