Our recent Greenpower race at Castle Combe was another valuable step forward for the team, combining engineering innovation, data-driven decision making, and practical problem-solving. The students have worked hard throughout the season to improve the performance and efficiency of our car, and their efforts are beginning to show impressive results.
One of the most significant developments for this race was the introduction of a new set of lighter wheels. By reducing the rotational mass, the students learned how seemingly small changes can have a significant impact on vehicle performance. Less energy is required to accelerate the wheels, helping the car use its limited battery power more efficiently.
The new wheels are also narrower than our previous design, reducing rolling resistance. Through testing and analysis, the team explored how tyre design affects energy consumption and vehicle speed. This gave students a practical understanding of engineering principles that are often only encountered in the classroom.
Another major improvement was the addition of a freewheeling hub to the drive wheel. This allows the car to coast freely downhill without the motor turning, conserving valuable battery energy. Students learned about drivetrain efficiency and how mechanical solutions can be used to maximise performance over the course of an endurance race.
Perhaps most importantly, the students have continued to develop their skills in testing, evaluating results, and making evidence-based design decisions. Each modification was carefully considered, implemented, and assessed, demonstrating the iterative engineering process used by professional engineers.
The team’s hard work is reflected in our current position of 25th out of 179 cars nationwide. This is an excellent achievement and a testament to the dedication, creativity, and teamwork shown by everyone involved.
We look forward to building on these lessons and continuing to improve as the season progresses.
We would also like to thank our sponsors, Brown & Brown, Okee, and GBE, for their valued support throughout the season.
