Prep School
Year 3 and 4 students enjoyed a truly wonderful trip to Wells Cathedral School on Saturday for their inaugural cricket matches. Approximately thirty enthusiastic children participated in some genuinely positive encounters, where they brilliantly showcased their developing skills. Our staff were particularly impressed by their confident overarm bowling and solid contact with the bat! Across all the matches, our teams played with commendable spirit, and it was especially rewarding to witness so many children, relatively new to cricket, attentively absorb coaching advice and visibly enhance their performance.
The excitement continued on Tuesday as Wells visited Queen’s for a thrilling swimming gala. A series of fantastic races unfolded, leading to a nail-biting situation where only four points separated the schools as we moved into the relays. Thanks to some superb swimming from every team, Queen’s emerged victorious!
Boys Cricket
U11A ESCA Somerset Cup
In a thrilling finale that had the crowd holding its breath, Luca and Alex took on the daunting task of chasing 31 runs in the final 3 overs. With fearless intent, Luca opened with a boundary and sharp running, while Alex followed with a crisp four through the onside. Each ball brought the target closer, their communication and decision-making shining under pressure. But despite their spirited charge, they finished 7 runs short – scoring 24 in a dramatic innings that showcased far more than just numbers. This was a performance defined by heart and progress. The boys – and team alike – batted with courage, clarity, and composure, revealing not just their growing skill sets but their development as teammates and individuals. Though the win slipped away, their maturity and resilience were undeniable. On a day where the scoreboard told one story, their character told another – they left the field as true winners in every sense.
U11A v King’s College Prep
On a scorching day, Queen’s put on a superb batting display, posting their highest run total to date. Boundaries came thick and fast, highlighted by our first-ever six, a fantastic moment for the team. Unfortunately, the boys struggled to find the line and length with the ball, which ultimately cost us the match. However, they finished the day on a high with a splendid wicket from Myles — a great moment of skill and determination. It was a disappointing result, but as always, they learn, reflect, and go again.
U10 King’s College Prep
The U10A/11 B’s had a very close and exciting game against King’s Prep. Having lost the toss, the Queen’s boys were put into bat and applied themselves sensibly to post a very respectable total of ‘288’ with Oliver top scoring on 22. In response, King’s struggled at times against some steady bowling with Rex, Josh and Will proving particularly hard to score against. A most pleasing performance from all of the boys who applied themselves commendably.
Girls Cricket
U10 v Blundell’s
Two tough matches for the U10 girls across at Blundells, the girls worked so hard and were determined and resilient against some organised opposition. The girls should be proud of their efforts and how they represented the school.
Girls ESCA cup tournament
The girls played Taunton first and bowled well, limiting their opportunities and keeping them down to only 32 runs. However, the girls struggled to put on runs, playing a little too safely.
In the second and third matches, they played more of a hit-and-run game, which led to some more exciting games! They took a number of wickets off both Millfield and Kings, which was pleasing.
The last games against King’s was our best. They fielded well and put pressure on their batters. Into bat they were aggressive and stole a number of runs. Going into the last over they were close, but they took a wicket from which let their win slip through our grasp.
Senior School
More and more teams are joining the unbeaten U12A team in their winning ways, yet the highlight over the past week was the First XI’s battling entertainment at Wells on Saturday. It was a bat-first day and with a captain who can’t call wrong they found themselves making first use of the wicket. Posting 150 all out with two overs to go fell short of what could have been, but those runs were made by positive starts throughout the order and so a big score doesn’t seem far away. Meanwhile, it was time to make this score count and that the team did with an amazing response. Bowlers were fired up and accurate, making the run-scoring difficult for Wells. They took the first 4 wickets at less than 15 a piece and continued to dent the progress of Wells innings. They just needed two more wickets to win, but credit to their number four batter who held his side’s chase together and won them the game with an unbeaten half-century. It was definitely their best outing yet for lots of reasons, not least the thrilling contest but also the way they gave back the short ball to great effect, and how they saw Munesu, Josiah and Tristan thoroughly deserve their first XI call ups.
The First XI had their first home game on Monday hosting Wellington in the plate. More lessons were learned than delivered in this match, and with those reflections, the team continue to train well and prepare to showcase their best cricket.
The Girls First XI hosted King’s on Saturday in another tough contest but with the outstanding revelation of Bahiya enjoying batting as well as her favoured bowling and fielding disciplines. Both Bahiya and Eliza batted well and Tassie the pick of the bowlers as the team picked up 5 wickets in the match.
The Year 7 and 8 Girls went to Millfield to pick up a win, a close finish and a defeat in a healthy block of matches on a sunny Wednesday afternoon. The U13A were victorious and proved a point to take on the A team next time in a convincing win. Tori bowled well, Isla was energetic in the field and everyone contributed including direct hit run outs. Juno hit the first six on her way to retiring before Charlotte and Livi took care of the rest of the chase.
The Year 7 and 8 Boys went to King’s College Prep for their midweek block where they achieved two wins and a loss. Again the highlights came in the face of defeat with Ollie standing strong against some fiery pace bowling after Ben enjoyed two boundaries using the pace on the ball. All the bowlers toiled in the heat and they learned the benefit of starting on the boundary and remembering positions for left and right handed batters and for set or new batters. The U12s continued their dominance, winning their game against King’s Prep 2nd XI and in the third encounter, the B teams battled in a softball match to add another victory to a successful week of learning to win and prioritising enjoying the game and playing it better.
