Queen’s College, Taunton, was delighted to host the Business Language Champions event today, welcoming enthusiastic Year 9 students eager to showcase their linguistic talents in French, German, and Spanish. The event, titled ‘All in a Holiday’s Work,’ was an inspiring and dynamic experience, designed to highlight the invaluable role of languages in international careers, particularly in the tourism and hospitality industries.
From Queen’s, we had 2 teams of six competing, who were immediately immersed in an exciting challenge that required them to step into the shoes of international hotel executives. Their mission? To design a brand-new hotel in their target country, making crucial decisions about location, size, and target market—all while using their foreign language skills to communicate and strategize effectively. Throughout the day, students engaged in a range of activities that tested their leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities, all while reinforcing their vocabulary and spontaneous speaking skills in a real-world context.
The atmosphere throughout the day was one of enthusiasm and determination, with teams working collaboratively to complete their tasks. The competition element added an extra layer of excitement, and the event culminated in the announcement of the winning teams and individuals, who impressed the judges with their creativity, business acumen, and linguistic prowess.
We are incredibly proud of all the students who took part, demonstrating not only their language skills but also their ability to think critically and work as a team. Queen’s were just pipped to the post for a team prize but Max and Nana won individual prizes! A huge thank you to everyone behind the scenes who made this event possible and most importantly, the students, who embraced the challenge with such energy and enthusiasm.
Events like these reinforce the importance of language learning and the vast opportunities it can bring. We look forward to hosting more initiatives that inspire young minds to see languages as a key to global opportunities. Well done to all who participated!
