Year 6 John Muir Award

Year 6 John Muir Award

Last Saturday 22 Year 6 pupils spent the afternoon exploring the Quantocks as part of their John Muir Award.  This is a national environmental award that focuses on young people understanding, appreciating and consequently looking after their local natural environment.  Pupils were given maps and in small groups had to navigate from Lydeard Hill car park to Wills Neck trig point putting into practice lessons learnt in the classroom.

After checking out the view and a quick snack at the trig point, they walked to the woods to complete some tree surveys looking at size, type, foliage and condition as part of a national tree survey.  The results have since been uploaded to a national database which tracks the changing condition of our woodlands.

The weather was fantastic and the pupils were wonderful company.  They were all enthusiastic and interested in their local environment.  Looking closely at the condition of our local woodland sparked many interesting conversations about conserving natural places and how we can enjoy these spaces.
