Prep School
The Year 4 children kicked off the week of sport at Prep with some of them travelling to Blundell’s for a rugby and hockey festival. They all represented the school admirably and learned a lot from the experience, listening attentively to coaching advice and playing tenaciously.
On Monday, the Year 3 and 4 boys travelled to King’s Prep for a triangular with Wellington. The boys worked hard and showcased the skills they’ve been developing. Great progress was evident, which was fantastic to see. The girls hosted West Buckland. The U8 girls had a fantastic afternoon of hockey with some very competitive matches. They showed a real improvement in their ability to use space as the afternoon progressed and displayed some great phases of attacking play, resulting in some fantastic goals. The Year 4 girls also performed well against strong opposition, starting to pass the ball wide and run with the ball effectively.
On Wednesday, the girls had some tough matches against Blundell’s. The B/C teams had brilliant, even games and fought hard for every ball. Olivia in goal did a fantastic job, with Oumou named as player of the match. The A side had a tougher challenge against a team that had qualified for nationals. The U10‘s away had some great end-to-end matches with the B team clearing the ball strongly but needing to look up to pass more effectively, the A team fought hard throughout the match with several goal-scoring opportunities and fantastic goal-keeping from Ffion.
The boys travelled to Wellington and Blundell’s for triangulars. All four teams had both highs and lows but the continuing theme is that the boys are putting into practice what they are learning in lessons. The U11 teams again showed their continuing progress with quick offloads and effective passing, while the U10 were similarly playing good attacking rugby.
Senior School
Rugby
U16 vs Stover
On Thursday, the U16 boys took on Stover School in wet and windy encounter. With both teams fielding a mix of experience, it was a chance for all to further develop their rugby skills. Stover took an early lead but the Queen’s boys responded with some relentless attacking play. Jonny was everywhere, making tackles and carrying ball and James dominated the back line with his impenetrable defence.
U12 vs Wellington and Blundell’s
On Monday night, the U12 boys visited Wellington School in a floodlit festival between Queen’s, Wellington and Blundell’s. The first game v Blundell’s was arguably the best the boys have played this season. Crunching tackles, huge ball carries and ferocious at the breakdown. With added depth and width in attack, the boys were unlucky not to win the game. The match v Wellington saw more of the same impressive rugby from the boys. Surging runs from Archie and some awesome tackles from Hunter, Henry and Mitch meant the Queen’s boys emerged victorious.
Touch Rugby Fixture
Last weekend, Queen’s hosted an inter-touch rugby fixture that brought together the senior age groups for an exciting and dynamic morning of rugby. The event provided an excellent opportunity for all students to deepen their game understanding, build confidence with the ball, and most importantly, enjoy the spirit of the game.
Set against the backdrop of the first-team rugby pitch, the matches were marked by free-flowing try-scoring action. Players showcase their skills in creating space, exploiting gaps, and executing impressive attacking plays. Conversion attempts added to the excitement, while tactical box kicks introduced another dimension to the game, challenging both defences and kick chasers alike.
The inclusive format ensured that everyone had opportunities to contribute, with moments of individual brilliance and cohesive team play shining through. Whether it was a well-timed pass, a decisive run, or a crucial defensive effort, every student had the chance to be involved and grow their confidence on the pitch. The morning embodied the core values of rugby: teamwork, respect, and enjoyment. It was fantastic to see the players embracing these principles while developing their game in a supportive and fun environment.
Hockey
U14/15B Girls Hockey vs West Buckland
The U14/15B hockey team delivered a dominant performance on Saturday, showcasing their best hockey of the season in a 4-1 victory over West Buckland. From the first whistle, Queen’s demonstrated precision and control, with Flora opening the scoring in the early minutes after excellent team play. Buoyed by their strong start, Issy added a second goal, capitalizing on the team’s offensive momentum.
Although their attacking approach left gaps at the back, Talya’s impressive saves in goal ensured the team stayed ahead during critical moments. A third goal followed in the first half, with Jess striking cleanly from the top of the D.
The team’s focus on ball pace during training paid off, with sharper play leading to more effective 16 hit-outs. Emma frequently linked up with Sudem in midfield, while Madara’s adaptability in defence further strengthened the team’s performance. Innes was steadfast at the back, denying several counterattacks, and Nana’s energetic runs up the wing, supported by Duru’s clever transfers, created opportunities on the right side. Lara’s tireless efforts in both attack and setup play were key, and Issy sealed the match with a well-placed fourth goal into the bottom corner.
This outstanding performance highlighted the team’s progress in possession, pace, and execution—a style of play that promises continued success in future fixtures.
U13A Girls v Blundells
An outstanding display of hockey by our U13A. The ball pace, shape and role clarity was impressive. The girls’ bounce-back-ability helped them equalise twice from being behind and then go 3-2 up until the last-minute goal from Blundells completed the scoring for the day at 3-3. The work rate and hard-hitting attributes throughout this side make them a treat to see. The girls came up against a really strong goal-keeping performance or the score-line would have better reflected our dominance in the match. The three goals were all well-deserved, firstly an amazing strike from top D by Livi in a penalty corner, and the other two goals came from Mabel’s stick having been so tenacious in the D and ready to put away crosses by Willow and Tori.
