Boys U11A – In2Hockey County Competition – By Mr Venning
Queen’s College produced a series of performances to be proud of in a demanding set of three matches against Millfield, All Hallows and Taunton, showcasing resilience, teamwork and real competitive edge throughout the afternoon. The tournament began superbly against a strong Millfield side, with Queen’s starting on the front foot and setting the tone early. Sharp passing, intelligent movement and disciplined defending allowed the players to work brilliantly as a unit, building confidence and momentum that carried seamlessly into the second game. Standards remained impressively high against All Hallows in a truly spectacular contest, where Queen’s narrowly missed out by a single goal. The highlight of the match was arguably goal of the tournament moment, with Jonah producing a sensational finish that lifted the whole team. Despite the fine margins, there were standout performances right across the pitch, underlining another excellent all-round team display. In the final game against Taunton, the team dug deep and left absolutely nothing out there, giving 110% until the final whistle. A sensational finish saw Queen’s again fall just one goal short, but with heads held high they secured an overall runners-up position – an outstanding achievement after three tough, closely fought matches. A very proud moment to see the progress these boys have made – well done all.
Boys U11A vs West Buckland – By Mr Venning
The U11s produced a thrilling performance against West Buckland in a fast-paced and highly competitive fixture. From the opening whistle, Queen’s set the tone with sharp passing, intelligent movement and a real determination to work for one another. West Buckland tested the defence early, but strong tackling and calm decision-making at the back kept them at bay, allowing Queen’s to grow in confidence. As the game opened up, Queen’s began to dominate possession, creating a number of well-worked chances through excellent teamwork and width across the pitch. The midfield worked tirelessly to link defence and attack, while the forwards showed great composure in front of goal, capitalising on sustained pressure. Tremendous goalkeeping at key moments ensured momentum stayed firmly with Queen’s, and the team’s energy never dropped. It was a superb all-round performance, full of effort, skill and togetherness, and a thoroughly deserved result against a strong West Buckland side.
Boys U10A vs West Buckland – By Mr Burlingham
The U10s were involved in an exciting and end-to-end contest against West Buckland, showcasing fantastic enthusiasm and bravery throughout. From the start, Queen’s played with real intent, pressing high, chasing every ball and showing impressive confidence in possession. The players moved the ball quickly and supported each other brilliantly, creating space and opportunities going forward. West Buckland provided a tough challenge, but Queen’s responded superbly, showing resilience and determination in defence and attacking with pace and purpose. Several excellent passages of team play led to well-taken goals, while strong goalkeeping and last-ditch defending kept the opposition at bay during tense moments. The energy, smiles and commitment on display were a joy to watch, making this a hugely positive performance and a brilliant learning experience for the whole squad.
Netball
U10A vs Milfield – by Mrs Czeres
The sun was finally shining as our U10A team welcomed a strong Millfield side for a high-energy, fast-paced encounter. It was a fantastic afternoon of netball that saw our girls grow in confidence with every rotation, stepping up their intensity as the game progressed. The attacking play was a highlight, with Emily, Amandine, and Elsie all finding the net with three fantastic goals. It was particularly rewarding to see the whole team utilising the specific techniques and drills they have been learning during training, showing real growth in their tactical play. Emily was deservedly voted Player of the Match for her excellent contribution to the game. As we look toward our next session, we will continue cleaning up our footwork to ensure our movement remains sharp under pressure. The girls worked tirelessly until the final whistle and should be incredibly proud of the determination and spirit they displayed throughout.
U10 vs Milfield Black – by Mrs Czeres
The U10 Black team had a brilliant time hosting Milfield for a sun-drenched afternoon of netball. It was one of those great, evenly matched games where both sides really pushed each other from start to finish. Lowenna was on fire in the circle with some fantastic shooting, while Katie did an amazing job reading the game and transitioning quickly from defence to attack. The girls looked really comfortable on the court, using the space well and showing some great teamwork as they rotated through different positions without missing a beat.
Frankie took home Player of the Match for a strong performance, but the whole team should be proud of how they played together. While the effort was spot on, we’re going to keep polishing our defensive work—specifically focusing on how we guard the ball, the player, and the open space simultaneously. We’ll also be practising our forward passing to ensure we are driving into gaps to meet the ball, and we’ll continue cleaning up our footwork to keep our play sharp. All in all, it was a lovely afternoon of netball and a great effort by everyone involved.
U10 Gold – by Mrs Swanson
The Under 10 Gold team were as vibrant as the sunshine as they took to the court against Milfield. From the first whistle to the final play, the girls worked tirelessly, demonstrating impressive levels of endurance, fitness and determination. Every player had a moment to shine, contributing positively to the team effort throughout the match.
A special mention goes to Paige, who showed great courage in taking a long-range shot; her confidence was rewarded as the ball sailed cleanly into the net. While the girls’ developing netball skills were a real highlight, what impressed both Queen’s and Milfield staff most was the kindness and sportsmanship shown by all players. The girls consistently encouraged one another across both teams, creating a supportive and joyful atmosphere. It was a pleasure to see them not only developing their netball abilities, but also their social skills and teamwork.
Year 6 V Maynard U11B by Mrs Gardner
The U11B team enjoyed a wonderful afternoon of netball as they travelled down to Maynard School for a high-energy fixture. Playing the five-a-side rotation Bee Netball rules, the girls were given the chance to test their versatility across the court in a full hour of competitive play.
Yellow Team Highlights
The Yellow team displayed fantastic dynamism from the first whistle. Their play was defined by quick transitions and speed down the court. While the passing was occasionally “wayward” in the heat of the moment, the vision from Bella, Emilie, and Ffion was evident, providing a strong foundation for the team. It was particularly pleasing to see the shooting duties shared so effectively, with several players finding their range and contributing to the scoreline.
Black Team Highlights
The Black team showed impressive maturity, consistently responding to tactical advice from the coaching staff. Polly put in a shift of “total’ netball, marking her opponents with tenacity and precision. Meanwhile, Annabelle’s persistence in the circle paid off; her shooting technique developed visibly as the match progressed, earning her a well-deserved Player of the Match accolade.
Beyond the scores, the “spirit and determination” shown by every player was the real highlight of the day. The girls balanced their competitive drive with wonderful sportsmanship, taking the time to make new friends with the Maynard players between rotations. The afternoon concluded with a tremendous three cheers from all the girls, celebrating a successful and fun-filled trip.
U11A
The U11 squad worked hard at a busy netball tournament on Saturday to compete with schools across the region. We played our best netball against the stronger oppositions which stifled their progress down the court and we also effected goals against the top teams too. It was a narrow defeat of 4-3 to Sherborne in our preliminary group that led to tough play-offs before finding ourselves battling in the bottom division. The girls stuck to task well, and shared positions around to finish the day smiling for all the netball we played and the amazing progress in our defensive skills with so many turnovers won throughout. Well done team.
The U11 team followed their momentum from Saturday’s tournament up with a triangular at Maynards on Wednesday. It was a really fun competition to play on / off mixing opponents but achieving a full match against both. Maynards dominated on court as we were unable to answer their 5 goals in the first half. Then we took the lead against St Peters and returned to the Maynard’s game with more fluency. Harriet held on to some balls into the circle really well and put up two goals to their 4 in the second half. It was a challenging game, but one we found pushed our defensive glue, and revealed a key opportunity in winning more rebounds. In our second half with St Peters we scored four more goals, and finished winners by 7-2. The highlight of this game was Megan’s rebound success as she followed in every shot and jumped to claim more chances. Together with Alila their shooting success was really pleasing. The whole team’s play had benefited from improved passing direction and pace combined with creating more space to keep possession.
Senior
Senior Boys 1st XI vs Wells – By Mr Knight
Queen’s fell to a 5–2 defeat against Wells in an entertaining contest. A quick start from Wells saw them take an early 1–0 lead, before Queen’s thought they had equalised, only for the goal to be disallowed. That setback didn’t halt Queen’s momentum, as they began to play some good hockey, but Wells were clinical and went into the break holding a 3–1 advantage. The second half was a really good contest, with both sides creating plenty of chances, but Wells made theirs count to extend the lead. Despite Queen’s continued effort, the match eventually finished 5–2 in Wells’ favour.
Senior Boys 2nd XI vs Wells Cathedral – By Mr Venning
It was an exciting and hard-fought hockey match, with the team showing real determination and togetherness from the opening whistle. Under sustained pressure for long periods, our goalkeeping was nothing short of tremendous, producing a series of outstanding saves that kept us firmly in the contest and gave the team belief at crucial moments. In front of goal, the players worked tirelessly for one another, moving the ball with purpose and showing excellent teamwork both in attack and defence. As the match wore on, our composure and collective effort began to tell, allowing us to take control at key moments and capitalise on our chances. The final result was a thoroughly deserved and important win, built on resilience, selfless team play, and a performance everyone can be proud of.
U15 Hockey Match Report: Queens vs Wells – Mr Bell
Queens opted for a combined U14/U15 squad against Wells, giving several younger players the opportunity to step up a decision that proved pivotal as the match unfolded.
Mo, Ollie and Louis were outstanding throughout, showing real dominance and composure against strong opposition. Queens started brightly and pressed hard from the opening whistle, almost finding instant reward when Jo fired narrowly wide in the early stages. In wet and testing conditions, the game remained end-to-end, with both sides battling for control and creating chances. Queens continued to compete well across the pitch, matching Wells’ intensity and work rate. A late goal for Wells ultimately proved decisive, but the scoreline did little to reflect the effort and promise shown by the Queens side. Despite the tough conditions and result, the performance highlighted the exciting depth of talent coming through the age groups and provided plenty of encouragement for the future.
U13B Hockey Match Report: Queens vs Exeter Cathedral (Midweek Fixture) – Mr Bell
Queens U13B delivered a superb midweek performance against Exeter Cathedral, starting the match with real intent and energy from the opening whistle.
The bright start was quickly rewarded, as within the first ten minutes Harry smashed in a stunning hat-trick, all expertly finishing off the backboard to put Queens firmly in control. Not to be outdone, Henry continued his excellent season form, adding a string of goals to consistently build on his already impressive tally.
At the other end of the pitch, captain Tom was dominant in defence, leading by example with strong positioning, calm decision-making, and tireless effort. His leadership set the tone for a team performance built on endless running, excellent positional understanding, and smart off-the-ball movement throughout.
It was an epic win, full of attacking flair and disciplined teamwork, and another performance that generated plenty of talking points. This U13B side continues to show real excellence and promise as the season progresses.
U14 vs King’s Bruton – by Mr Knight
The U14A squad delivered a superb all‑round display at the county tournament, growing in confidence and quality as the day progressed.
They opened with a tightly contested 0–0 draw against Wellington early in the morning before finding their rhythm and securing a hard‑fought 1–0 win over a strong Kings Bruton side. Momentum continued to build as the team produced a dominant performance to beat Taunton 3–0, putting themselves in a strong position heading into the final match.
With everything on the line, the final game brought high stakes: a draw would leave the team 3rd and out of qualification, while a win would crown them county champions and send them to regionals. The boys rose to the challenge brilliantly. They took the lead against Wells, were pegged back to 1–1, and with less than two minutes remaining, Maurice scored a decisive winner to seal a dramatic 2–1 victory in a fierce, well-fought contest.
A fantastic effort across the squad—county champions and through to regionals!
Netball
Netball 1st Team – by Meg Rowswell
The Girls’ 1st Netball team faced a tough loss against Lewston, but produced a hardworking and determined performance despite not having a full team available. The girls showed great resilience throughout the match and took away many valuable lessons that can now be applied in squad training as they look to come back stronger.
There were several standout performances, with Hannah M playing exceptionally well and dominating the centre court. In defence, Tabbie and Tassy worked effectively together in the D, while Meg C showed strength and determination, standing her ground to get around strong defenders.
U14A by Mrs Halls
The U14s showed great improvement against Leweston this week, with much better passing through the court giving us more options in the D. Strong, disciplined marking put the opposition under pressure and forced numerous passing errors, allowing us to win countless turnovers. Despite a hard-fought performance, the team narrowly lost 26–21. A special mention to Willow, who was awarded MVP for her outstanding contribution.
U15A by Mrs Harrison
The U15A’s had a tough game on a very slippery surface outside. We were too passive for 3 quarters of the game and allowed them to dominate possession. In the last quarter we found our stride and showed what we are capable of when drive forward and play as a team. Great defensive work from Talya, and Eliza worked tirelessly in the centre court.
U12A by Mrs Gardener
Today’s game showcased some encouraging passages of play, with the team demonstrating significant progress in their transition and ball movement down the court. In the first half, Amalie and Eleanor provided a consistent presence in the shooting circle, though securing rebounds at both ends remains a key developmental focus. The mid-court unit—comprised of Gracie-Jean, Poppy, Matilda, and Timsayo—linked up effectively to feed the post, while Oumou and Polly were tireless in their defensive efforts. Eleanor’s versatility shone in the final quarter, where she moved into defense to provide several crucial tips. While it was a well-deserved victory, our upcoming sessions will prioritise sharpening our passing quality, ball pathways, and defensive delaying tactics. Congratulations to our standout performers: Eleanor (Player’s Player), Oumou (Coach’s Defender), and Amalie (Coach’s Attacker).
Tuesday 3rd Feb- Wellington school
U14A by Mrs Halls
The U14 team put in a determined and committed performance against Wellington School in a well-fought match. Despite our best efforts, Wellington’s high intensity and pressure throughout the game proved difficult to overcome. We showed great resilience and worked hard in all areas of the court. Our passing through the midcourt was particularly strong, allowing us to move the ball with confidence and create attacking opportunities. The team contested well in defence and never stopped working for each other. Although we faced a challenging opponent, the players maintained a positive attitude and continued to compete right until the final whistle. This match provided valuable experience and highlighted areas to build on as we continue to develop. Well done to all players for their effort.
U14B – by Mrs Foster
We took numbers and enthusiasm to this mid-week clash at Wellington. We played in the sports hall thanks to the rain so hurried through longer thirds. Positions were rotated to meet everyone’s scoring intentions. We went into the first break 4-2 down with winning in mind, but we struggled to reach the circle edge and feed the shooters in our second third. Wellington dominated to extend their lead to 8-2 before the final passage of play. We finished with great success in that every time we fed the circle we came back to centre pass having scored. Minty really helped picking up loose balls in the goal third and Elaine was unstoppable under the post to score five goals. There were loads of positives, including becoming more physical and vocal to match our opponents and make the last third the most competitive.
U12A Netball Tournament – Millfield Prep School by Mrs Halls
The Under 12 team travelled to Millfield School for a competitive and enjoyable netball tournament played in bright, sunny conditions. The girls faced strong opposition throughout the day and showed great determination and teamwork.
Our opening match was against Collegiate, which finished in a well-fought 4–4 draw. The team started positively, moving the ball well and showing confidence in both attack and defence. Next, we played Hazelgrove, where we worked hard but were unable to convert enough chances, resulting in a 7–2 loss. Despite the scoreline, there were some excellent defensive turnovers and strong individual efforts. The third match was against Millfield, who proved to be a tough opponent. Although the team created opportunities, we struggled to finish in the shooting circle, and the game ended in a 9–3 defeat. Throughout these matches, the girls showed great energy and commitment. Defensively, there were many good interceptions and turnovers. However, at times we lacked consistent connections through the mid-court, which made it difficult to build sustained attacks and turn possession into goals.
We then went on to play Kings Prep and Port Regis in the ‘play-offs’, where the team continued to work hard and apply what they had learned earlier in the day. The sunny conditions and positive atmosphere helped maintain enthusiasm and team spirit.
Overall, this was a valuable learning experience for the squad. While shooting accuracy and mid-court connections remain areas for development, the team showed plenty of promise, resilience, and a willingness to improve. There is lots of potential in this group, and with continued training and match experience, they will continue to improve.
U12 and U13B/C Vs Exeter Cathedral
A brilliant afternoon of netball against Exeter Cathedral School, showcasing not only their growing skill but also their enthusiasm for the game. Both teams approached the fixture with great energy, and the matches were played in a fantastic spirit from start to finish.
