What makes an outstanding Prep School? For me, it starts with something quite simple: children who are happy, feel safe and know that they belong. Of course, academic success matters, and we are rightly proud of the achievements of our pupils, but an outstanding education must be about so much more.
One of the most important parts of my day is standing at the school gate each morning, welcoming children and families as they arrive. Knowing children by name, sharing a conversation, celebrating an achievement or simply noticing when someone isn’t quite themselves. These small moments matter. They build relationships, trust and a genuine sense of belonging. An outstanding Prep School is one where every child is known, valued and understood, and where families and staff feel part of something special.
At Queen’s, community is at the heart of everything we do. We recognise that no two children are the same, and our responsibility is to understand their individual strengths, interests and challenges. Success looks different for every child, and rightly so. Whether it is finding their voice, overcoming a challenge, discovering a new passion or excelling in something they love, our ambition is to help every child become the very best version of themselves.
That ambition is underpinned by exceptional teaching. We are fortunate to have a team of talented and committed staff, including colleagues with High Performance Learning accreditations and those who contribute to education more widely as governors and inspectors. This experience brings fresh thinking, challenge and perspective into our classrooms. We are proud of our academic achievements, but equally determined never to stand still.
The world our children will grow into is changing rapidly, and schools must be prepared to adapt. Strong academic foundations remain essential, but so too are curiosity, creativity, resilience, collaboration and the confidence to think independently. Our curriculum reflects this ambition. Curiosity Lab encourages children to explore, question and solve problems beyond traditional subject boundaries, while Beyond the Game develops the thinking, decision-making and behaviours that help children thrive through sport and beyond.
Perhaps one of the clearest examples of our ethos in action is We All Can, a dedicated part of our curriculum which connects learning with the wider world. Through community projects, service days, charitable work and opportunities to learn from others, children develop empathy, leadership and a sense of responsibility. They begin to understand that education is not simply about what they can achieve for themselves, but the difference they can make to others.
For me, an outstanding Prep School strikes a careful balance. It is nurturing yet ambitious, rooted in strong values yet unafraid to innovate. It celebrates academic achievement alongside creativity, sport, performance and service. It encourages children to take risks, learn from mistakes and develop the confidence to embrace new challenges.
Underpinning all of this is a community of children, families and staff who genuinely care about one another and share a commitment to making things better.
Ultimately, our responsibility is not simply to prepare children for their next school, but for the opportunities, challenges and responsibilities that lie beyond it. Because the measure of an outstanding Prep School is not just what children achieve while they are with us, but the people they become along the way.
