Art Faculty Extension Session: Art Conservator Restorer Visit

Art Faculty Extension Session: Art Conservator Restorer Visit

The Art Department hosted another engaging Extension Session last Thursday, with the added privilege of welcoming Marine Andrieux as part of Careers Week. Marine, an Art Conservator Restorer, shared her expertise on the challenges of preserving older pieces of art. She explained how she identifies issues such as peeling paint, cracking, tears in canvas, and insect damage, using a combination of practical art skills, Art history knowledge, and science.

Marine uses advanced techniques like X-rays, ultraviolet light, and infrared to diagnose problems in artworks. She then cleans and repairs paintings, frames, and sculptures, working closely with owners throughout the process. Her career has led her to work on masterpieces by Banksy, Picasso, and even medieval art over 700 years old.

During the session, Marine demonstrated some of the tools she uses in her work, allowing pupils to try out black lights and magnifying goggles for themselves. The session proved to be highly informative, and the department has been invited to visit Marine’s workshop in the summer term—an exciting opportunity for our Art students. Marine’s visit has sparked interest among pupils in the field of restoration and conservation, opening new career possibilities for some!
