Prep

On Monday, all the Year 3 and 4 children travelled to King’s College Prep for their final cricket session of the term. Their enthusiasm and energy were infectious—remarkable for this stage of the term—and every child represented Queen’s brilliantly, showcasing the progress they had made throughout the season.

On Tuesday, the team travelled to Wellington for their final swimming gala of the year, led by their outstanding captains, Jahmae and Amalie. The team swam confidently in a slightly longer pool, winning many of the races and securing a comfortable overall victory to end the season on a high. Special thanks went to all the swimmers who had trained consistently throughout the year. They had all improved immensely and set a high standard for school swimming. It was hoped that many of them would continue to represent the school as they moved into Year 7.

The South-West Prep Schools Athletics Championships provided another exciting highlight. This popular event offered Queen’s athletes valuable experience competing against strong opposition in a professional athletics arena. Many personal bests were achieved, with Florence earning a silver medal in the javelin and qualifying for the National Prep School Athletics Championships in Birmingham this July.

Queen’s College Cricket Festival
Under clear blue skies and summer sunshine, Queen’s College proudly hosted a fantastic day of cricket for our local community. With over 120 children from eight different schools taking part, the festival was a true celebration of the game and its power to bring people together.

The day was split into two softball competitions and one hardball tournament, all played with outstanding spirit, enthusiasm, and sportsmanship. The energy and passion on display throughout the matches were a credit to all the players and schools involved. From exciting run chases to sharp fielding and moments of individual brilliance, the cricket was competitive, inclusive, and joyful in equal measure.

Adding to the excitement, we were delighted to welcome Somerset CCC professionals Alfie Ogborne and Andy Umeed, who joined us for the afternoon presentation. Their words of encouragement and presence made the day even more special as they presented the finalists with their well-earned awards. The festival was a resounding success and a wonderful opportunity to showcase not only the talent and enthusiasm for cricket within our community but also the values upheld here at Queen’s College, teamwork, respect, and a love for the game.

U11A Boys at the King’s Bruton Festival
Yesterday’s cricket festival provided a fantastic day of competitive cricket, team spirit, and some outstanding individual performances across three exciting matches.

Match 1 vs Hazelgrove
The day began in style with an excellent all-round team performance against Hazelgrove. Queen’s bowlers set the tone early, maintaining pressure and capitalising on any loose deliveries. The discipline in the field and smart bowling changes kept the opposition under control. In response, Queen’s batters wasted no time, scoring quickly and efficiently. Seb and Luca both retired on 20, demonstrating calm and composure at the crease. It was a superb team effort and a thoroughly deserved victory to kick off the festival.

Match 2 vs Port Regis
The second game was a thrilling contest that went right down to the wire. Chasing a competitive total, Queen’s batters showed great character and resilience. Despite conceding a few too many extras in the field earlier in the game, the team remained focused and took the match deep. Ultimately, they fell just one run short in a dramatic finish, but it was a brave run chase and an excellent learning experience for the team.

Match 3 vs Monkton
The final game of the day took place after many overs under the hot sun, and fatigue understandably began to show. Queen’s bowlers struggled to maintain the tight lines seen earlier in the day, and Monkton capitalised, scoring freely. Despite this, there was a standout moment with the bat—Jonah delivered a superb opening performance, stepping up with confidence and demonstrating the potential he holds for the future. Although the result didn’t go Queen’s way, there were still positives to take from the match. Overall, it was a day full of valuable lessons, encouraging displays of skill, and moments of brilliance.

Mixed Cricket Matches
The U10A girls and U11B boys played a wonderful match against Weston Zoyland, joined by Mr Clarke, a former Prep School teacher. The games were played in great spirit, with strong camaraderie, and Queen’s pupils showed excellent sportsmanship, supporting the Weston Zoyland teams—many of whom had little cricket experience. Meanwhile, the U10B teams had their final cricket outing of the year with an internal mixed-gender match. It was a fantastic opportunity to round off the season, and both the boys and girls thoroughly enjoyed the friendly competition.

Senior School

Queen’s U12/U13 vs Exeter U13
On a lively afternoon of cricket, Queen’s U12/U13 faced off against Exeter U13 in a spirited encounter. Exeter won the toss and chose to field first, putting Queen’s into bat on a slightly unpredictable pitch.

Queen’s Innings – 121 All Out
Opening for Queen’s were Henry and Owen. The early overs promised a solid foundation, but Exeter’s sharp fielding and disciplined bowling soon brought the first breakthrough — Henry caught for 5. Tom followed, falling for a duck, and Harry went cheaply for just 1. Queen’s found themselves in trouble at the top of the order, needing a partnership to steady the innings.
It came in the form of Max and Owen. The pair showed composure and grit, rotating the strike well and punishing loose deliveries. Owen batted fluently, retiring after a well-earned 30, while Max added a crucial 26 to the team total. However, once this duo departed, Queen’s innings stuttered again.
Freddie was dismissed first ball, Ollie chipped in with just a single, and Mitch also went for a golden duck. Ben offered some late resistance with 8 runs before being dismissed, and Luis went for 0. A late 3* not out from Ollie helped push Queen’s total to 121, all out.

Exeter’s Innings – 89 All Out
Defending a modest total, Queen’s knew early wickets were key — and they delivered. Tom led the charge with early breakthroughs, putting Exeter on the back foot from the outset. Freddie followed up with another wicket, keeping the pressure firmly on the visitors.
Harry and Owen both chipped in with key wickets, with Owen’s tight lines proving particularly difficult to handle. Max returned with the ball to take two wickets, capping off a strong all-round performance that also included an excellent effort in the field.
With Exeter struggling to form partnerships, the Queen’s bowlers maintained their dominance. Henry wrapped up the innings in the 16th over, sealing an emphatic win as Exeter were bowled out for 89 in just 15.1 overs.

Result: Queen’s U12/U13 win by 32 runs
It was a thrilling, low-scoring contest defined by tight bowling, sharp fielding, and a vital middle-order partnership. Queen’s displayed resilience and teamwork to turn the game around after a shaky start, claiming a well-deserved victory.

Somerset Schools Athletics Championships – Yeovil

They will now go on to represent Somerset Schools at the next level—an incredible achievement!
