Queen’s is delighted to announce that full planning permission has been granted for the installation of six state of the art panoramic covered padel courts, delivered in partnership with Smash Padel. This milestone means that the project can now move forward at pace, with groundworks expected to begin in December.

The new padel centre will provide year round, all weather access to one of the fastest growing sports in the world. The courts will be fully integrated into Queen’s sports provision while also creating an inclusive community hub open to the public.

Kim Dawkins, Bursar at Queen’s, commented:
Securing planning permission is a fantastic step forward for Smash Padel, Queen’s and for the local community. This project underlines our commitment to providing world class sporting facilities while also making them accessible to all. Smash Padel are not just a partner but a valued part of our community, and we also wish to thank Taunton Town Council for their support during the planning process.

Construction will take place in stages, beginning with groundworks in mid December before canopy installation in February, followed by the installation of courts, pavilion, and landscaping in spring. While timings will depend on contractors, Queen’s and Smash Padel are working towards an opening in April 2026.

Tom Bell, Director of Sport at Queen’s, added:
Our pupils will have an incredible opportunity to play and learn padel right here on site, integrated into PE, co curricular, and performance training. It is a brilliant sport for building teamwork, confidence, and fitness, and we are excited to see it thrive at Queen’s and across Taunton.

Carson Russell, Chief Operating Officer at Smash Padel, said:
Our partnership with Queen’s goes far beyond building courts. We share a commitment to inclusion, participation, and opportunity, and we are proud to be investing not just in facilities, but in people. Supporting Queen’s Facilities Improvement Projects was a natural step for us, as we want to see this sport, and the community around it, open to everyone.

The project will also deliver environmental enhancements, including biodiversity measures and careful lighting designs to protect local wildlife, reflecting the school’s commitment to sustainability.

Ian Thomas, a Governor of Queen’s, added:
This is an ambitious and exciting development that reflects Queen’s role as both a leader in education and a contributor to the wider community. We look forward to welcoming pupils, families, and the public onto our courts and to seeing padel become part of the fabric of Taunton life.
